Every day as I drive out of my development, I see them. They sit all in a row on the utility wires looking down, waiting. I can feel their stares as they wait patiently for their next meal. Does anyone like buzzards? If you had a choice would you pick being a buzzard, or some pretty bird like a humming bird?
The dilemna is that buzzards have been created to function with an important job. They are the cleanup crew to our world. Buzzards will detect when something has died from a mile away, and then swoop down to eradicate it. They remove all of the carcasses, which eliminates rotting flesh, dangerous diseases and bacteria. They have been specifically designed to do their job well. Their feet can walk perfectly on the ground, but are not designed to grab prey with their talons. The heads of buzzards don’t have feathers so that they can go into the cavity of the carcass. In other words, God designed them specifically for the job that He had for them!
At this point, if you are still reading this blog, you might be totally disgusted! But hang in there.
The exciting news is that God has a plan for you and for me. In Psalm 33:11 it says, “The counsel of the Lord stands forever. The plans of His heart from generation to generation.” His plans are in his heart and He knows exactly what is needed. You may feel that you are a bit like a buzzard and would like to be a humming bird but, the Lord needs you to be a buzzard. The season that you are in may not seem so fruitful, safe, peaceful, or comfortable, but are you in the will of God? Our responsibility is to follow after our Messiah, to walk in the path He has for us, whether we like it or not. We have this promise in 1 John 2:17, “The world is passing away, and also its lusts; but the one who does the will of God lives forever.”
As a new year approaches, listen to the Father’s heart. Walk in the path that He has for you. Don’t compare yourself to the humming bird alongside you, be the buzzard that God has designed you to be, and flourish this new year!
